Mandela Day

What is Mandela Day?
Honoring the legacy of former South African president Nelson Mandela, his July 18th birthday is an annual occasion to focus on the ability and responsibility we all have to change the world for the better!
International Walk in Unity
In 2021 and 2022, we celebrated Mandela Day with a 1 mile meditation walk at the Silver Lake Nature Center in Bristol, PA, to empower and inspire ourselves. In 2021 we focused on four themes: the impact of the pandemic, climate change, diversity and inclusion, and early childhood education. In 2022, we heard from South Africans Dr. Nico de Klerk and Jabulani Zwane, who told us about the “Be a Nelson” initiative Nico leads. “Be a Nelsons” are outstanding social entrepreneurs who are making a huge impact in the under-resourced communities where they live, and where the legacy of apartheid is crushing. The program enhances their entrepreneurial skillsets through courses, conferences, and coaching. Nico also introduced and signed his book, “No Fit, My 1,700-Mile Walk from Apartheid”. Simultaneous Mandela Day walks in other countries remind us of our connection as global citizens. Walking facilitates bonding and unity across boundaries.
